Parc Central of Valencia: A Green Oasis in the Heart of the City

In this blog I’m going to tell you about one of my favorite parks of Valencia to go to when I want to to have some time in nature and take a quiet walk. It is called “Parc Central” in Valencian or “Parque Central” in Spanish.

About the Parc Central of Valencia

Valencia’s Parc Central is a large urban green space located between the Ruzafa and Malilla neighbourhoods with more than 100,000 square metres of land. It was inaugurated in December 2018, representing one of the city’s most important urban regeneration projects. Located in the heart of Valencia, on land formerly occupied by railway tracks, Parc Central has become a key space for leisure, culture and recreation for citizens.

Origin and historical context

Parc Central is part of the ambitious plan to redevelop the railway lands that for years divided the city in two. The burying of the railway tracks and the construction of the new high-speed train station in the Jesús area opened up the possibility of converting this area, previously industrial and for railway use, into a large-scale urban park. This is a project with an important historical recovery component, as it includes the preservation and restoration of some of the original railway elements.

The design of the park was commissioned to the American landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson, known internationally for her innovative approach to the creation of green spaces. Her proposal won the international ideas competition in 2011, and since then work has been carried out in phases to complete the more than 60 hectares planned for the park in its entirety.

Design and layout of Parc Central

The park, with an initial surface area of 23 hectares, is divided into various themed areas that integrate harmoniously with the surrounding nature, railway infrastructure and reclaimed historic spaces. Each area has a unique design and offers different environments and uses, allowing visitors to enjoy a wide variety of experiences.

Main areas of the park:

  1. Jardín de las Hespéride (Garden of the Hesperides ). This space is inspired by the Greek myth of the Hesperides and is dominated by a large pond and fruit trees. It is decorated with sculptures and plant elements that evoke the old Valencian orchards. It is one of the most peaceful and contemplative areas of the park.

  1. El Parque de Los Niños (The Children’s Park). This area is designed specifically for the enjoyment of the little ones. It has safe and modern play areas, adapted to different ages, and shaded areas that allow families to enjoy quality time in a green environment.

  1. Jardín Romántico (Romantic Garden). Inspired by the romantic gardens of the 19th century, this section of the park offers a route full of lush vegetation and flowers. Here, visitors can enjoy a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere, with curved paths and benches strategically placed for relaxation.

  1. Jardín del Agua (Water Garden). Water is a key element in the design of Parc Central. This area features ponds, fountains and canals that emulate the traditional irrigation system of Valencian orchards. It is also intended as a tribute to the agricultural history of the region.

  1. La Fuente de los Chorros(The Fountain of the Jets). This is the only bathing area in the park. It is an interactive fountain with water jets that vary in intensity, which makes it a very popular spot during the summer months for cooling off.

  1. Lawns and sports areas. The park also has large grassy areas where you can relax, picnic or play outdoor sports. There are basketball and football courts, as well as jogging and cycling tracks.

Architecture and historical integration

One of the particularities of Parc Central is its ability to combine historical and modern elements. Several historic buildings that formed part of the railway infrastructure of the old Valencia station have been integrated into the design of the park. These include the Nave de Ribes, a former railway workshop that has been restored and converted into a cultural space for exhibitions and events.

Another important element is the Conservation of Railway Heritage, which is reflected in the incorporation of railway tracks and old industrial elements that have been preserved as part of the landscaping of the park. These infrastructures not only evoke the industrial past of the area, but also provide an interesting contrast to the green areas and recreational spaces.

Sustainability and the environment

Parc Central has been conceived under criteria of environmental sustainability, both in its design and its maintenance. More than 1,000 trees and 85,000 plants of autochthonous species have been planted, which allows a better adaptation to the Mediterranean climate and reduces the need for irrigation. In addition, the park has a rainwater collection system that is used to water the green areas, contributing to an efficient use of water resources.

The park also promotes sustainable mobility. It is perfectly connected to the rest of the city by bicycle lanes, wide pedestrian pavements and public transport, which facilitates access without the need to use a car.

Social and cultural impact

Parc Central has had a significant impact on the social and cultural life of Valencia. Since its inauguration, it has become a meeting place for citizens, where they can enjoy outdoor activities, cultural events and temporary exhibitions. It is also an ideal space to exercise, organise family activities or simply disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The construction of the park has also revitalised the surrounding neighbourhoods, increasing the real estate value of the area and attracting new residents and businesses. With the completion of the remaining phases, the impact of Parc Central is expected to continue to grow, establishing itself as one of the city’s main urban landmarks.

Future of Parc Central

The entire project has yet to be developed, as the original plan foresees the park occupying more than 66 hectares when the future phases are completed. These will include new green areas, sports and cultural facilities, and connections to other areas in the south of the city, which will further increase the park’s relevance as the green epicentre of Valencia.

In short, Parc Central de Valencia is much more than a park; it is a space where railway history, modernity, nature and urban life merge, offering Valencians and visitors a unique place to enjoy and rediscover the city.
